Early Music ensemble with period instruments and voice
Carolina Pro Musica was established in 1977 to promote the performance of music written before 1800 through the use of historic instruments and/or copies and in the performance practice of the periods in which the music was written. The Ensemble has had a concert series since that time utilizing local churches and historic St. Mary’s Chapel. They have performed in the Southeast, Boston during the Early Music Festival and in Europe (Poland and the UK) including Handel’s London home, now a museum. Belmont Abbey College has honored them with Abbey Artists status since the 2001-2002.

Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
37 years
What is your primary product or service?
Concerts with period instruments and voice
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
My father built me a harpsichord from a kit while I was in undergraduate school. I went on to become a teacher, church musician and college music instructor but the love of the harpsichord helped gather friends to play chamber music. Concerts were the result and Carolina Pro Musica was founded.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
There are only 1-2 other early music ensembles in the area. Most of them perform 18th c music. We also do medieval music but not on the same concerts as 18th c. music. We also have a permanent ensemble of 4 persons which do most of the performances. These 4 have been together for about 20 years. Other local groups have lots of people and use different ones on different concerts.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We perform in St. Martin's Episcopal Church and St. Mary's chapel. In 2014 we added Peace Moravian Church in South Charlotte as a new venue. This we have done for years and have no plans to change. We also perform at Belmont Abbey Basilica in Belmont, NC.
